It is 12:20am on 1 January and the spectacular New Year firework display has just finished. Crowds who have had a prime viewpoint on Victoria Embankment begin to disperse, walking past Big Ben towards Parliament Square. The majority will be taking one of two routes - ahead towards Victoria or right, along Whitehall, towards Trafalgar Square.
