Pevsner states these apartments were built by c1720, founded through the bequest of Thomas Penny.
Originally 12 apartments were built, but 2 were demolished in 1929-30, to make room for the pavement on King Street.
A chapel stands at the far end. The telephone exchange beyond rather spoils the view.
