This is the double decker bus inspired by the old Routemaster. It can have a conductor, and will then have an open platform at the back letting passengers hop on and off. It has two sets of stairs, and three doors. It replaces the bendy buses. The first prototype bus is on show around London from 17th December to 7th January 2012. It will enter service on route 38 from Victoria to Hackney in February. The bus uses a hybrid diesel-electric drive, with fuel consumption twice as good as a diesel bus. See TFL page LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
In general I was impressed, and as a cyclist I am delighted that the dangerous bendy buses have gone. As small criticisms the headroom on the upper deck is limited, and the access from the rear stairs to the upper deck is quite narrow.
