Torfield Cottage, Old London Road, Hastings
Once home of Titus Oates, who was baptised over the road in All Saints Church, 1649.
In 1679 Oates said he had discovered a plot (the "Popish Plot") to kill Charles II, to be replaced by his bother James, claiming that Protestants would be massacred in their thousands.
Several Catholics were executed, including Oliver Plunkett, before it was revealed that Oates was lying.
In 1683 Oates was imprisoned, and in 1685 found guilty of lying. He was pilloried, whipped and imprisoned for life. However he was released in 1688, and died in 1705.
