The ROC nuclear monitoring post at Langholm
The ROC nuclear monitoring post at Langholm
The Royal Observer Corps was introduced in 1925 to identify incoming enemy aircraft, and in 1955 with the escalation of the cold war, the ROC had the task of monitoring nuclear blasts and fall out and relaying information back to Group Headquarters. 1563 small underground chambers were built up and down the countryside about 7 to 8 miles apart for this purpose. The Langholm post, situated in farmland near Wattie’s Bank, was opened in 1961 and closed in 1991. The surface access hatch is locked but partly open.
