The spire attains a height of 202 feet and is a well known landmark locally. Apparently 13 different types of marble are used in its construction, mainly internally, as the exterior is limestone and on a sunny day sparkles as white as a wedding cake. Externally it also features many fine carvings of gargoyles and statues.

It was built between 1856 and 1860.
