A Velvet Shank growing on a mossy stump
This orange fungus is Flammulina velutipes, commonly known as Velvet Shank owing to the feel of the stem. It is one of the few edible species available through the winter. It is sometimes recommended to remove the skin (pellicle) from the cap before cooking.
