This informative signboard outside the SP2997 : Merevale: Gate House and Church of Our Lady details information about the church which is behind the gate house, and some historical notes about royal visitors to the abbey, viz:
1485 Aug 20/21: Henry Tudor, Duke of Richmond stayed at Merevale Abbey before his victory at the Battle of Bosworth. His army camped nearby.
1503 Sept: Henry VII stayed at the abbey again, and stained glass of his patron saint St Armel was placed in the south isle of the gate chapel.
1511 Aug 30: Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon stayed at the abbey to visit the site of the battle.

The pennant featuring the welsh dragon is that of Henry Tudor later Henry VII and the roses are the Tudor rose made by combining the White Rose of York with the Red Rose of Lancaster, signifying the unification of the two houses and the end of the Wars of the Roses.
Gate House, Merevale :: SP2997
Merevale Estate Gate House on the B4116 Merevale Lane to the west of Atherstone was built in 1848/49 for the owner of Merevale Hall, Sir William Dugdale the antiquarian. The architect was Henry Clutton (1819-1893) and it was built of sandstone ashlar in the Gothic Revival style. It is Grade II listed. Behind it lies the Grade I listed church of Our Lady.
