Symbister: Pier House
A small böd, or booth, where trading of fish would have taken place. Although it is variously described as being the centre of Hanseatic trading - i.e. of the Hanseatic trading alliance that flourished on northern European coasts from the 13th to the 17th centuries - that claim is doubtful because it is reckoned that the pier on which it stands dates only from the late 17th century. The Hanseatic booth would likely have stood on the shore, behind us, on a spot now occupied by a house.
