William Hulme, founder of the William Hulme Charity, lived 16311691 in Hulme Hall, Stockport. In 1881, the Trustees of his charity were empowered to build schools and WHGS was founded in Manchester in 1887.

This detail is on the side of the original school building which was designed by A H Davies-Colley in 18861887
