Statue of William Chambers, Chambers Street Edinburgh
Statue of William Chambers, Chambers Street Edinburgh
William Chambers (1800 - 1883) was born in a weaver's cottage in Peebles and became a publisher, businessman and philanthropist. His brother Robert was similarly gifted, becoming an author and publisher in partnership with William. William Chambers was Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1865-1869, responsible for a programme of slum clearance and development of the area around the street now bearing his name.

Curiously enough, this statue stands almost exactly 33 km due N of his birthplace at Biggiesknowe in Peebles - see NT2540 : Plaque on Chambers House, Biggiesknowe, Peebles.
