Westbound coal train at Mirfield
View eastward, towards Thornhill, Wakefield, Normanton etc.: ex-L&Y Calder Valley main line. (See other Mirfield images for more detail). The Class H train is headed by ex-WD 2-8-0 No. 90399, one of the unexpectedly long-lasting locomotives built for war service twenty years before. It was built as No. 8607 (later 78607) in 12/44 and shipped to France almost immediately (1/45): it was returned in 1947, but not put to work until 5/48 (at Newport Ebbw Junction), then in 3/49 to the LMR (Central Division), lasting until 3/65.
