St John's Church, St Leonards on Sea
The current St John's is the fourth church on this site, all since 1865. The roof of the first church came off after one year. The second was burned down in 1878. The third lasted until the Second World War when it was bombed in 1940. Construction of the present church began in 1950. Its architect was Mr Goodhart-Rendel, a leading authority on Victorian Gothic architecture. The Foundation Stone was laid by the Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh on 18th May 1951. The nave was dedicated in September of the following year and the Chancel was dedicated in September 1957; additions such as the vestry and lower chapel continued into the 1960s.Link
