Rail bridge over the Avon, South Brent
This is the railway bridge over the River Avon, seen from the northern most point of the Island.
The bridge was built in two distinct phases, the earliest in around 1848 when the South Devon Railway was constructed under Brunel's guidance as a single track broad gauge line; this is the far part of the arch on the right but from this angle is obscured by the later part. It can be seen more easily from the L'Aunes footpath SX6960 : River Avon in South Brent along the river which passes under the complete bridge. The second phase was constructed around 1893 when the Great Western Railway, which by then had absorbed the SDR, created a double track line. It was at this time that many of Brunel's original timber single track viaducts were rebuilt in stone as double track. See SX6859 : Glazebrook Viaduct
