Beamish regional store - Doxford diesel engine
Beamish regional store - Doxford diesel engine
This store is a joint venture between Beamish and Tyne & Wear Museums and this particular exhibit is the property of Tyne & Wear Museums. It is a Doxford opposed piston two stroke diesel engine designed to burn heavy oil. It is a type 58JS3, number SO500. It was an experimental engine that first ran at the works in 1979, last ran about June 1983 and was sold to the museum services in 1986. It was originally stored at Hebburn but moved to Beamish in 2001 and the large objects store was effectively built around it.
