SK9771 : Lincoln Cathedral Font

taken 11 years ago, near to Lincoln, Lincolnshire, Great Britain

Lincoln Cathedral Font
Lincoln Cathedral Font
The massive square font in Lincoln Cathedral, early Norman work (11th century) in black Tournai marble, similar to the font in Winchester Cathedral and Thornton Curtis in Lincolnshire LinkExternal link . The bowl is carved with winged beasts, supported on a large central pillar with smaller columns at the four corners. We can but wonder how many children have been baptised here in the last 950 years !
