Outwood Mill - storm damage
Outwood Mill - storm damage
Built in 1665, this post mill is the oldest working windmill in the country. Grade I listed - for listing particulars see LinkExternal link.

On 5 January 2012, during a severe gale, one of the sweeps was badly damaged - the remains can be seen on the ground to the right of the mill.

For the full story, see LinkExternal link.

For a photo of the mill from the same spot, with a full set of sweeps, see TQ3245 : Outwood Mill.

Until 1960 there was a smock mill next to it, but this was destroyed in a gale that year. For a photo of the two mills together, see LinkExternal link. What makes the site a good spot for a windmill clearly has its disadvantages.
