This is the preserved John Fowler horizontal duplex steam winder on the Trevor shaft. This was an escorted visit beyond the barriers to a position below the driving cabin. A pre-restoration picture may be seen here ST0491 : Steam winding engine Lewis Merthyr Colliery.

This engine was latterly run on compressed air from a power house up the road and I saw it run several times before closure in 1983.
