This is believed to be the site of Mark 115 on the Ordnance Survey line of 1845 between Kendal and Thirsk (see LinkExternal link ) which was levelled as 588.8790 feet [179.4903 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). The surveyor's description was 'Mark on jamb of door of M. Turner's yard, at East end of West Witton ; 1.56 ft above centre of road'.
