The sign of the House of Hanover, adopted by many 18th Century inns to demonstrate loyalty to the new Royal dynasty. A white horse is also the emblem of the County of Kent. The name can also refer to the chalk horses carved into hillsides.

The parish of Stoke contains two villages, Lower Stoke and Stoke (Upper Stoke). The parish lies at the eastern end of the Hoo peninsula just west of the Isle of Grain.
Lower stoke is the larger of the two settlements with a range of services including a school and pub.
