Sumburgh Head Lighthouse
Sumburgh Head Lighthouse
This neat and sturdy lighthouse was built by the famous lighthouse engineer, Robert Stephenson in 1821. His sons David, Alan and Thomas all became lighthouse engineers too and built many more lighthouses around the Scottish coast. (e.g. HU4837 : Bressay Lighthouse looks out to sea HU2078 : Esha Ness Lighthouse and NB5166 : Butt of Lewis - The Lighthouse)
This lighthouse at Sumburgh is only 17m (56') tall but poised where it is high on the cliffs its focal height is 91m and it has a range of 23 miles. It was automated in 1991 and the keepers' houses are now available as holiday accommodation.
