Big Wood and Big Wood Barrow Cemetery
Big Wood is a deciduous woodland on a hill top just south of Winterbourne Abbas. It is Wherrybones Wood from Thomas Hardy's novels. The site also has several Barrow Burials or Tumuli along the edge of the woodland and just inside it.
Tumulus, Tumuli
A tumulus (plural tumuli) is a mound of earth and stones raised over a grave or graves. Tumuli are also known as barrows, burial mounds. In Britain they mainly date from Neolithic to the Bronze Age (2900 - 800BC), although some are later.
Scheduled Monuments
In the United Kingdom, a scheduled monument is a 'nationally important' archaeological site or historic building, given protection against unauthorised change.
There are about 20,000 scheduled monuments in England representing about 37,000 heritage assets. Of the tens of thousands of scheduled monuments in the UK, most are inconspicuous archaeological sites, but some are large ruins.
