Pontfaen church with pillar stones
This ancient little church was once almost ruined but rebuilt in Victorian times. Now the interior is surprisingly ornate. It is one of several local churches dedicated to St Brynach, an early Christian saint from Ireland who established a cell here but was said to have been driven away by the howling of evil spirits! The two tall stones that stand in the graveyard, although carved with 9thC. crosses, suggest this may have been an pre-Christian site that the saint had appropriated.
