St James' church, Cooling
St James, looking out over the marshes towards the Thames, is often said to be the inspiration for Dickens' "Great Expectations"; very early in the book we meet the young hero, Pip, clearing weeds from the graves of his parents and siblings, and the churchyard contains graves of just such a large family. (The probable cause of death was malaria, endemic in the marshes until the nineteenth century.) The rounded stones placed along the graves are a typical Kentish feature.
