The Lake and Grand Bridge in Blenheim Park
The Lake and Grand Bridge in Blenheim Park
The lake has been created by impounding the River Glyme, a tributary of the Evenlode.
The bridge you see now, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, is only the top of a more grandiose original structure pre dating the lake. Ridiculed by critics at the time for being out of scale with the small River Glyme which it spanned, the lower part of the bridge was deliberately submerged beneath the lake created by Capability Brown in about 1765.
