Maths and Social Science Building and Faraday Building, Sackville Street, Manchester
Maths and Social Science Building and Faraday Building, Sackville Street, Manchester
Two of several bold post-war buildings for the former University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. The far mass of exposed concrete comprises a main slab around which are several smaller towers. With its two higher towers at either end it is quite a landmark on the surrounding skyline. By Cruickshank & Seward, 1966-68.
Nearer the camera is the lower part of the Faraday Building, also of concrete, by H.M. Fairhurst, 1967 (the abstract patterns are by Antony Holloway). It is joined by a bridge over Sackville Street to a tower (SJ8497 : Faraday Tower, Sackville Street, Manchester).
Since UMIST's merger with the University of Manchester in 2004, the maths building has become redundant and its future seems uncertain. Wikipedia states that "it was built on the site of cramped terraced housing that accommodated factory workers that was studied by Friedrich Engels in his book The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844."
