SK1687 : Hope Cross without capstone

taken 12 years ago, 4 km NNW of Hope, Derbyshire, England

Hope Cross without capstone
Looking south - taken in sleet and rain!

The capstone went AWOL at some time unknown after Christmas 2011. The capstone will have been quite heavy and was mounted on a spike over 6 feet above the ground. You can see the indentation where it must have hit the ground.

The very muddy, partially waterlogged, track descends for over a mile before it becomes tarred and is designated a bridleway. There was evidence of much recent wheeled traffic, mostly two wheeled. I passed a legitimate farmers tractor on his way to tend sheep, but it's no track for anything less than a sturdy 4x4.
