Field at Whitney-on-Wye
Field at Whitney-on-Wye
The trees in this field suggest this was formerly parkland, Whitney Court is just above the trees. Following the right edge of the field is the route of the former Hereford, Hay and Brecon Railway, this section of the line between Moorhampton and Hay-on-Wye opened in 1864. During the late 1860s and 1870s a regular passenger on this line was the famous diarist, Rev. Francis Kilvert. The line was in use for a century, it closed to passengers, pre-Beeching on 31 December 1962, and finally shut to goods in 1964.
