Halford Bridge [4]
Halford Bridge [4]
This Medieval bridge of four arches with another detached arch has long been by-passed by the A429 Fosse Way. The bridge and the detached arch are listed buildings Grade II - more details at LinkExternal link The bridge as a whole is a scheduled ancient monument. The name Halford was once Aldford meaning Old Ford and alluded to a ford of the River Stour here.
The bridge was the site of a famous skirmish during the English Civil War on 6 March 1645. Clothing of troops was very important and the Royalists raided a supply convoy travelling from Gloucester to Warwick as it crossed the original narrow bridge, seizing over 10,000 of cloth and 120 horses.
Also three early Medieval inhumations with grave goods including a spearhead, sword, shield boss and knife were found at Halford Bridge. Other skeletons reported in the vicinity suggest that this was part of a larger cemetery.
