My Aunt used to draw from a smaller one of these in the 1950s with a yoke to carry the buckets, as the milk for cream and butter in the stone floor kitchen and pantry, on the edge of Cleeve Common, Cotswolds, Whitehall Cottages (now a giant overpowering renovation). In those days the cottages were just two side to side and a cat and kitten shed full of hay and an outside pit toilet with a cold wooden seat which my Pa wanted to sort out. My grandfather eventually had a pump and new well down the slope toward the main house after the water authorities got at him, with electric pump! Nice chap but not keen on new technology. If somebody can explain some of the allowance by Planners and why the Common Gate is derelict and the place was full of rusting car, perhaps they might also know why my Uncle's bungalow was so brilliant with Bean flowers and vegetables where he and my aunt and then two cousins lived. Up slope there was the still standing, in part, horse yard and barn, but the cow shed now seems part of the big structure, at least it is all in Cotswold Stone, with the chickens wandering around the well head from which eggs had to be hunted out of the hedgerows.
