SJ8935 : Canal above Lock No 32 at Meaford, Staffordshire

taken 7 years ago, near to Oulton, Staffordshire, Great Britain

Canal above Lock No 32 at Meaford, Staffordshire
Canal above Lock No 32 at Meaford, Staffordshire
The bridge ahead is a turnover bridge designed to allow a horse to cross from one side of the canal to the other without having to be unhitched from the boat. In this image, the horse will pass over the bridge from the left, double back on itself after crossing the bridge, then continue along the towpath beyond the bridge - on the right.

In the foreground on each side of the canal are the ground paddle posts. These are used to let water into the lock. At present the paddles are down because the lock (the second one up in the Meaford flight of four) is full and the gate is open, awaiting an approaching narrowboat.
