Turnover Bridge near Meaford, Staffordshire
Turnover Bridge near Meaford, Staffordshire
Bridge No 97 across the Trent and Mersey Canal, seen from Lock No 32.

A turnover bridge allows a horse to cross from one side of the canal to the other without having to be unhitched from the boat. In this image, the horse will pass over the bridge from the left, double back on itself after crossing the bridge, then continue along the towpath beyond the bridge - on the right.
