The Queen of Mercia
The Queen of Mercia
This sculpture sits by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn. It depicts Aethelfleda, the Mercian princess, as the prow head of a vessel. She is looking in the direction of where the fortification, which she erected at Runcorn c. 914 A.D. to defend Mercia from Vikings, would have been.
