A view from the north end of the island platform of Saltley Station (closed 6/3/68), towards Washwood Heath Yard, and Derby/Leicester: ex-Midland NE - SW main line. The engine is on the Up Camp Hill Goods line, while the two tracks over to the left are the Down and Up Lawley Street Goods lines. The signalbox in the middle distance is Saltley Sidings: the Canal Wharf branch went left, just out of sight is the viaduct carrying the Stechford - Aston line over the main lines and on the right is the great Metropolitan-Cammell Works. There was a constant flow of trains of all kinds, and of light engines to and from the Locomotive Depot south of the station. Here running Up tender-first is LMS Fowler 4F 0-6-0 No. 44057 (built 1925, withdrawn 11/65) - a type still numerous in the area in 1965 in spite of the rapid advent of Diesels.
