The junction of Cornwall Road with Roupell Street, Waterloo
This is the view along Cornwall Road towards Roupell Street. This survival of terraced houses is just north of Waterloo East station and quite a surprise to find it so close to the South Bank. It adds to the scene that two traditional looking shops have survived on the corners. Ian Nairn in Nairn's London published in 1966 says "Real cockney, still in good condition, still where cockneys ought to be, embedded in Central London. Here is true architectural purity ... nothing but yellow London brick and unselfconscious self-respect."
