Nessie in the winter sun near Sutton Bridge
North of Sutton Bridge and the former lighthouse on the east bank of the River Nene. This machine has 2 caterpillar tracks about 2 metres high and is one of a series of machines called Nessie. This one is Nessie V. It was used to travel out over the intertidal salt marshes and meet up with a boat in the Wash. The drum was loaded with several hundred metres of electricity cable and Nessie slowly travelled back, getting stuck at times, laying the cable on top of the marsh all the way to a terminal on the landward side of the Wash. Another machine, Nessie III, was then used to bury the power cable well below the salt marsh. When the work is completed there will be 2 massive power cables running from wind farms off the Lincolnshire coast, right through the Wash and then below land from where this photo is taken to an extended power station at Walpole several miles away.
