Berry Head defences
Because of its strategic position overlooking Torbay, Berry Head has been used, over thousands of years, for the construction of a number of defensive structures.
The earliest was an Iron Age hill fort, evidence of which largely disappeared with the construction of two Napoleonic War era Forts.
During the Second World War anti-aircraft guns and an observation post were sited on the headland.
Later, in the Cold War, a nuclear monitoring bunker was constructed.
It is now a National Nature Reserve and heritage centre.
