SH5542 : Ty Newydd a former gate house
near to Penmorfa, Gwynedd, Great Britain

Ty Newydd a former gate house
Prior to the draining of the lower Glaslyn estuary the most direct route eastwards was along this upland road to Aberglaslyn. Gates were erected to charge tolls on passing traffic, including animals being driven by drovers to England. This gatehouse, known as Ty Newydd, acquired the name Gatws Uffern (Hell's Gatehouse) because of the nefarious habit of the old woman who kept the gate of getting returning drovers intoxicated and relieving them of their money. The name is still used locally. The cottage is now empty and boarded up.
