River Ebble, Broad Chalke - 22
Swimming upstream are a number of mallard.
The mallard is the most numerous and widespread of our ducks. It is the prime target of the wildfowler who has increased the population in some areas b releasing birds reared in captivity. Like other surface feeding ducks, the mallard dabbles for its food, which consists largely of water plants and their seeds. It is, therefore, restricted to shallow water to a maximum depth that it can reach by up-ending.
