Rievaulx Abbey
The first Cistercian abbey built in the north of England was founded in 1132 by 12 monks from Clairvaux Abbey in France. They lived a strict life of prayer and self sufficiency. The abbey became rich and powerful in Europe. Three of its abbots were canonised - William the 1st abbot, Aelred the 3rd abbot and Waldef a monk and later abbot of Melrose
