Ty Mawr Ynyspandy, Cwmystradllyn
This remarkable edifice, rather resembling a ruined monastery, was built as a slate slab mill by the Gorseddau Quarry company headed by Robert Gill of Mansfield and John Harris of Darlington, two railwaymen with little knowledge of the slate quarrying industry. The mill was built here some two miles south of the Gorseddau quarry because of the shortage of water power on the quarry site. The mill had even a shorter life than the quarry, being functional for no more than half a dozen years. Two spurs connected the mill to the main tramway. The top level spur to the mill's top floor shows up well in this photograph.
