Even though the physical split to the M42 is one mile away, lane markings indicate a lane drop to the M42 nowadays. When first opened, the M42 split at junction 4a featured a straightforward exit with three lanes continuing southbound on the M6. London is a signed destination on both routes: the "classic" M6/M1 1970s version and the 1990s M42/M40 option.
