NX6087 : Kendoon Power Station Surge Tank
near to Glenhoul, Dumfries And Galloway, Great Britain

Kendoon Power Station Surge Tank
Part of the Galloway hydro scheme, this huge tank receives the back surge of water if the machines within the power station are shut down suddenly. It is open to the sky. Galloway is unique in its use of surge tanks at most of the stations, later UK practice has been to use surge shafts buried in hillsides. Galloway is not very hilly, hence the surge tanks and relatively low output of the stations.
