There is a very complex and dramatic panoply of crossings in this area. Ahead is the now-disused railway viaduct, formerly serving Central Station, of c1898 and c1877 with tremendous castellated steel piers. Immediately behind it is another viaduct, now used by trains and trams.
Further away, crossing the Bridgewater Canal, is a skewed railway bridge.
Then the Merchants' Footbridge, by Whitby & Bird, 1996.
Finally, the Merchants' Warehouse, including its paired shipping holes, provides the backdrop (SJ8397 : Merchants' Warehouse, Castle Street, Manchester).
