Tilgate Lake
Tilgate Lake (Campbell Lake)
Tilgate Lake is one of three recreational lakes in Tilgate Park. It was once a mediaeval hammer pond linked to the iron industry, but now is purely ornamental. Campbell Lake is due to its association with Sir Malcolm Campbell, who conducted floatation tests on this lake.
Tilgate Park
Tilgate Park is a large park in Crawley purchased by the Borough Council in 1960.

Wealden Iron Industry
The iron industry thrived in the Weald of Kent, Sussex & Surrey from Pre-Roman times until the Industrial revolution. The industry was based on Iron ore from the Cretaceous rocks of the area and charcoal from the woodlands. The remains of the industry can still be seen in the many Hammer ponds in the area. The use of coal not charcoal saw the demise of the industry.
