The Charles Lapworth plaque at Birkhill Cottage
The Charles Lapworth plaque at Birkhill Cottage
This plaque on the wall of the cottage was erected by Scottish geologists in 1931 to commemorate Charles Lapworth who stayed here at various times between 1872 and 1877 and used his discovery of graptolite fossils at nearby Dobís Linn to unravel the stratigraphy and structure of the Southern Uplands. The inscription reads:-

BIRKHILL COTTAGE
WHERE BETWEEN 1872 & 1877
CHARLES
LAPWORTH
RECOGNISED THE VALUE OF
GRAPTOLITES
AS A CLUE TO THE
GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURE
OF THESE HILLS
ERECTED BY SCOTTISH GEOLOGISTS 1931
