Buried sailing barge - Forton Lake
Buried sailing barge - Forton Lake
The remains of what is believed to be a sailing barge, covered by earth as the area was filled in by the local council during the 1970s. There are two vessels here; the first, FL5, is indicated by the shelf-like section of hull protruding from the mud closest to the viewer, slightly before the drop in elevation. This was excavated in 2007 and 2008 by the NAS/HWTMA Project, and partially during a site inspection prior to our 2009 fieldwork - as it happened, FL5 was a vessel we chose to put on hold for a later date, with our focus elsewhere (namely FL3, the minesweeper on the North shore, which took up a large portion of our schedule).

The second vessel, FL15, is located to the far left of shot - the post we see protruding vertically from the ground is the sternpost of what, like FL5, we believe was formerly a sailing barge. This too was excavated by the NAS/HWTMA Project in 2007 and 2008, however was not included at all in our current Project's initial schedule of fieldwork for 2009, nor in our updated programme for 2011. If any signs of decay are present, of course, during 2012 we will take another, closer look at these vessels but in the meantime, they don't feature highly on our list of priorities.
