This old plaque, on the corner of the street, seems to be advertising the presence of a local dairy but I don't have any details. See also NY4055 : St Nicholas Street, Carlisle

Edit December 2015: Brian Norman has contacted me to say that he has researched old Carlisle pubs and that between 1877 and 1894 the building was a pub called The White Ox. That would explain the white animal standing above the milking scene below.
