Replaced the original narrow Scotswood road bridge which had been built in 1831 and known as the Chain Bridge LinkExternal link
The modern bridge has a steel arch which suspends a box girder deck carrying two road lanes in each direction. It was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and constructed by Mitchell Construction/Dorman Long, 1964-67.
