Royal Liver Building, Pier Head, Liverpool
Royal Liver Building, Pier Head, Liverpool
One of the so-called "Three Graces", and surely Liverpool's most talismanic building. Built of granite-clad reinforced concrete, in 1908-11, to the designs of Walter Aubrey Thomas. "Perhaps the most extraordinary office block of its date in the country", suggested Pevsner. It possesses a remarkable combination of height and bulk, a mini-skyscraper which would fit effortlessly into New York. "The style is impossible to label." The skyline is fantastic (with echoes of Hawksmoor), festooned with towers, columns, domes, and of course the whole edifice crowned by two copper Liver birds. Grade I listed.
Built for the Royal Liver Friendly Society - though from the off too large for their needs alone - it is still occupied by its successor, Royal Liver Assurance.
The other two: SJ3390 : Cunard Building, Pier Head, Liverpool and SJ3390 : Former Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Pier Head, Liverpool.
